Best Antivirus Software of 2026

Last reviewed 19 May 2026 by Best Products UK Editorial Team

Windows ships with Microsoft Defender, which is free and rated 'good enough' by independent testing labs. Buying paid antivirus only makes sense if you specifically need the extras: VPN, password manager, cloud backup, identity-theft monitoring or multi-device licensing. This ranking treats the AV engine as table-stakes (all major brands detect 99%+ of malware) and sorts by what else you actually get in the bundle.

How we tested

Best Products UK is a review aggregator, not a test lab. For this guide we read Amazon UK customer reviews focused on real-world install/uninstall experience, subscription auto-renewal traps and customer-support response; cross-referenced against AV-Test and AV-Comparatives independent malware-detection rankings, NCSC (UK) guidance, and Which? testing. AV engine detection rates are largely equivalent at the top tier (Norton, Bitdefender, McAfee, Kaspersky); the buying decision is the bundle and price.

How to choose

VPN, password manager and what you can skip

Three questions cover the antivirus buying decision. Antivirus alone isn't one of them.

1.
Do you need the antivirus, or the bundle?

Microsoft Defender (free, built into Windows) scores top-tier in AV-Test rankings for malware detection. Paid antivirus exists because the brands also offer VPN, password manager, cloud backup, identity-theft monitoring and other tools. If you don't want those extras, skip paid AV and use Defender. If you want them, the paid bundle is often cheaper than buying each separately (a standalone VPN is £40-£60/year).

2.
Multi-device coverage matters for families

A 10-device licence (Norton 360 Premium) covers a household of laptops, phones, tablets and shared family devices. For single-PC users, a 1-device licence is cheaper but you'll buy several over time. Most paid AV is sold in tiers: 1 device, 3-5 devices, 10 devices, unlimited. Pick by household count; don't over-spec or under-spec.

3.
Subscription renewals: the trap

Every major paid AV auto-renews at full retail price (typically 3-4× the introductory rate). Norton 360 Premium at £40/year on first purchase often renews at £120+. Diary the renewal date and either cancel + repurchase as new customer, or downgrade tier, or switch brands. The 'discount' you see on Amazon UK is almost always a first-year price; year-two costs much more without action.

For single-PC users with no special needs: Microsoft Defender free. For multi-device households wanting VPN and password manager: Norton 360 Premium or Deluxe. For everyone else: read the bundle, decide if you'll use the extras.

The verdict

Norton 360 Premium wins overall; Microsoft Defender is the right free baseline.

The Norton 360 Premium takes the top spot among paid options because it bundles genuinely useful extras at one price: VPN with unlimited data (worth £40-£60/year alone), cloud backup, password manager, dark-web identity monitoring, and antivirus for 10 devices. For a multi-device household, this is the most value-per-pound paid security package on Amazon UK.

For most single-PC users who only want antivirus, Microsoft Defender (built into Windows 10/11) is rated highly enough by AV-Test that paying for AV alone isn't necessary. Paid antivirus earns its place when you need the VPN, password manager and multi-device coverage. Don't buy Norton 360 or McAfee Total Protection just for the AV engine — Defender does that job for free.

Below the premium tier, the picture is honest: smaller licences (1-3 devices) at lower prices, less-attractive bundle features, and the same antivirus engine. The McAfee Total Protection picks at #5-#8 are competent budget bundles; Norton Standard at #9 is the entry into Norton's ecosystem if you want the VPN and password manager without the cloud backup. Pick on the bundled extras you'll use, not on antivirus capability.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Is Microsoft Defender enough?
For most home users, yes. AV-Test consistently ranks Defender in the top tier for malware detection. The reasons to pay for third-party AV are extras (VPN, password manager, identity monitoring) rather than better malware detection. Stick with Defender unless you specifically want bundled extras.
Norton vs McAfee — which is better?
AV detection rates are essentially equivalent at the top tier. Differences are: Norton's UI is more modern and the dark-web monitoring is more useful; McAfee's bundle prices on Amazon UK are often cheaper. Both have aggressive auto-renewal pricing. Pick on bundle features and current price, not on antivirus capability.
Why does the renewal price double or triple?
All major antivirus brands use heavy first-year discounts to acquire customers, then charge full retail at renewal. Norton 360 Premium at £40 first year often renews at £100-£120. Diary the renewal date 2 weeks before; cancel auto-renewal, and either buy fresh as 'new customer' (frequently allowed) or switch brands.
Can I have two antivirus programs at once?
No — they conflict. Microsoft Defender automatically disables itself when you install a third-party AV. Don't try to run Norton and Defender at the same time. If you want to switch brands, uninstall the current one fully (use the manufacturer's removal tool, not just Windows Add/Remove) before installing the replacement.
Do I need antivirus on a Mac?
macOS has built-in protection (XProtect, Gatekeeper) that's good for the typical threat model. Most macOS users don't need paid AV. Paid Mac AV makes sense if you specifically want the VPN/password manager bundle (Norton 360 includes Mac coverage) or if you work in high-risk environments. For ordinary users, the macOS built-in tools plus a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden) is enough.
