Best Patio Heaters of 2026

Last reviewed 19 May 2026 by Best Products UK Editorial Team

Outdoor heating is the most over-marketed garden category — wattage figures, 'warms 20 m²' claims and dramatic infrared imagery all push you towards bigger and more expensive heaters. The truth is most UK patios need 1.5–2 kW of directional infrared to extend evenings by an hour, and a 13 kW gas pyramid is mostly heating the sky. This ranking sorts by how much warm-zone you actually get per pound on the meter.

How we tested

Best Products UK is a review aggregator, not a test lab. For this guide we read Amazon UK customer reviews focused on warmth perceived at 2-metre seating distance, weatherproofing through UK autumns, and running cost at current electricity tariffs; cross-referenced against Which?, Trusted Reviews and Good Housekeeping testing; and weighted long-term ownership signals (lamp failure, mounting integrity, switch reliability) more heavily than first-evening impressions. IP ratings are checked against listing claims, not assumed.

SIP Infrared Freestanding Pyramid Patio Heater (2 kW)
SIP

Infrared Freestanding Pyramid Patio Heater (2 kW)

9.4
/ 10
Excellent

SIP's electric pyramid heater is the rare freestanding electric that actually warms a seating circle. 2 kW carbon-fibre infrared radiates from a vertical glass tube; the pyramid geometry means warmth reaches people on all sides rather than just front. Tip-over safety switch included.

Why we love it
  • True 360° warm zone (4-person circle)
  • 2 kW infrared — efficient outdoor heat
  • Tip-over safety switch
  • Glass-tube durability
Watch out for
  • Premium price for electric pyramid
  • Tall — needs a stable level surface
  • Tube vulnerable to impact (not pets/balls)

HARRIER

2000 W Rounded Patio Heater (2026 Upgrade)

8.4

Good

HARRIER's 2026 refresh of the freestanding chassis — slightly sturdier base, longer pole, same 2000 W heating element. Marginal upgrade over #4 if the price is similar; not worth a premium difference for the same heating performance.

  • Same 3-setting power range
Watch out for
  • Heat output identical to #4

How to choose

Infrared vs convection, mounting style, and what's worth the money

Patio heater spec sheets are noise. Three principles drive the actual buying decision.

1.
Infrared > convection (always, outdoors)

Outdoor heating physics: convection heaters warm air, which immediately blows away. Infrared heaters warm objects (you, your chair, the table) directly with radiant heat. Every electric heater on this list is infrared because anything else is wasted electricity outdoors. The same logic applies to gas: pyramid gas heaters mostly heat air, while directional gas heaters (not in this list) warm people.

2.
Wall-mount under cover beats freestanding

A wall-mounted infrared heater under a patio cover or pergola throws focused heat at the seating area, with the cover preventing the wind from stealing it. Result: a 2 kW wall-mount feels warmer than a 13 kW freestanding pyramid in any breeze. If you have somewhere to mount one, mount one. Freestanding heaters earn their place only if you can't drill a wall or pergola post.

3.
Running cost matters more than purchase price

At 35p/kWh (UK average mid-tariff), a 2 kW heater runs at 70p/hour. Over 50 evenings a season, that's £35 — comfortably under any heater purchase price. But a 13 kW gas pyramid running 50 evenings burns through about £130 of gas. The cheap-to-buy heater is sometimes the expensive-to-run one. Reach for higher-efficiency infrared, not bigger wattage, to keep running costs down.

For most UK patios, a 2 kW wall-mounted infrared heater under cover is the right buy. Free-standing electric is the fallback if you can't mount; gas pyramids are reserved for genuinely open outdoor entertaining where mains power isn't available.

DONYER POWER Electric Quartz Patio Heater 2000 W
DONYER POWER

Electric Quartz Patio Heater 2000 W

8.1
/ 10
Good

DONYER POWER's quartz-filament variant — quartz lamps last longer than halogen (15,000 hours vs 5,000) which means lower lamp-replacement cost over time. Otherwise similar to the #3 listing; choose between them on price.

Why we love it
  • Quartz lamps — 3x longer life than halogen
  • Three heat settings
  • Waterproof rating
  • Adjustable tilt
Watch out for
  • Quartz takes ~10s to reach full heat
  • Generic brand support
  • Price often above halogen equivalents

Knightsbridge Mesh-Grille Outdoor Infrared Heater
Knightsbridge

Mesh-Grille Outdoor Infrared Heater

6.8
/ 10
Fair

Knightsbridge is a UK electrical-fittings brand more known for indoor switches than outdoor heat. The mesh-grille design is more decorative than functional; lower wattage and budget construction means it's a small-balcony heater, not a patio one.

Why we love it
  • UK brand with stocked spares
  • Compact design for small spaces
  • Mesh grille — gentler aesthetic
  • Mounting hardware included
Watch out for
  • Lower effective heat output
  • Best for one-person balconies
  • Halogen lamps need replacement

The verdict

SIP's 2 kW pyramid wins on heat output; Pro Breeze wall-mount is the cheapest to run.

The SIP infrared pyramid heater takes the top spot for one reason: it's the only freestanding electric heater on the list that genuinely warms a 4-person seating circle around it. 2 kW carbon-fibre infrared, glass-tube construction (durable for outdoor use), and the pyramid geometry that radiates heat in a 360° circle rather than a forward beam. Premium price but it actually works.

For homeowners who want low-cost evening heating rather than party-warming, the Pro Breeze 2000 W wall-mount infrared is the smarter buy. Mounted under a patio cover or pergola, it heats the people sitting under it (not the air around them) at a fraction of the running cost of a gas heater. IP65 waterproof means it stays out year-round.

Below the freestanding tier, the picture is repetitive: a dozen near-identical 2000 W 'HARRIER', 'DONYER POWER' and STATUS freestanding electric heaters at sub-£60 — they all do roughly the same job (one-person directional warmth) using the same import-sourced halogen elements. Treat them as 2-year tools rather than long-term investments and buy on current reviews and price.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Electric or gas — which is cheaper to run?
Electric at current UK tariffs. A 2 kW electric infrared heater costs around 70p/hour at 35p/kWh; a 13 kW propane pyramid burns about £1.30/hour of gas. Gas wins only when you can't run mains power to the location.
Will a patio heater warm me in the rain?
Sort of — infrared heats objects directly, so you'll feel warm even with rain falling. But the rain hitting you stays cold, which counteracts the warmth. Combined with a patio cover or pergola, an infrared heater works year-round. Without cover, expect to retreat inside in heavy rain.
How much area does a 2 kW heater cover?
Roughly a 3-4 person seating circle within 2 metres of the heater. Manufacturer claims of '20 m²' assume zero wind and zero heat loss; real-world coverage is far smaller. For a 6-8 person table, two 2 kW heaters at opposite ends works better than one larger heater in the middle.
Halogen vs quartz vs carbon — what's the difference?
Halogen: cheapest, fastest to heat up, shortest life (5,000 hours). Quartz: takes 10 seconds to reach full output, longer life (15,000 hours), slightly more expensive. Carbon fibre: warm-glow lamps with the longest life (30,000+ hours) and most efficient heat conversion — found in premium picks like the SIP pyramid.
Are patio heaters safe to leave outside?
Wall-mounted IP65 heaters: yes, year-round. IPX4 freestanding heaters: only in dry weather — bring inside or cover in rain. Cheap unrated heaters: store inside between uses. Always disconnect from power when not in use, and check the casing for moisture damage before each season.
