Best Face Creams of 2026

Last reviewed 19 May 2026 by Best Products UK Editorial Team

The face-cream aisle is full of expensive promises and underwhelming evidence. Dermatology consensus is simple: the only ingredients with strong clinical evidence are SPF (the single biggest anti-ageing intervention), retinoids, vitamin C, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. Everything else — peptides, plant extracts, '7-in-1' marketing — is supportive at best. This ranking sorts creams by which evidence-based ingredients they actually deliver.

How we tested

Best Products UK is a review aggregator, not a test lab. For this guide we read Amazon UK customer reviews focused on real-world skin response, fragrance tolerance and value-per-tub; cross-referenced against The British Association of Dermatologists, Paula's Choice ingredient database and consumer testing in Which? and Good Housekeeping; and weighted long-term ownership signals (after 8+ weeks of use, not first-application impressions) more heavily than launch-week reviews. SPF claims are flagged because UVA coverage matters as much as the SPF number.

L'Oréal Paris Revitalift Filler Hyaluronic Acid Day Cream
L'Oréal

Paris Revitalift Filler Hyaluronic Acid Day Cream

9.4
/ 10
Excellent

L'Oréal's hyaluronic acid day cream — the entry-level evidence-based moisturiser. Hyaluronic acid binds water in the upper skin layers for visible plumping; the cream base is pleasant under makeup. No SPF means you still need separate sunscreen.

Why we love it
  • Hyaluronic acid in a stable base
  • Sits well under makeup
  • Consistent batch quality (high volume)
  • Available across UK pharmacies
Watch out for
  • No SPF — sunscreen still needed
  • Light fragrance (mild irritant for sensitive skin)
  • 50 ml tub size is modest

Paris Age Perfect Le Duo Anti-Ageing Serum + Cream

9.1

Excellent

L'Oréal's two-step duo: a serum applied first, then a cream. The serum carries the active ingredients deeper; the cream seals them in. More expensive per gram than single-product equivalents but more efficient in terms of active delivery.

Why we love it
  • Two-step active delivery
  • Targeted at mature skin types
  • Pleasant texture combo
  • Visible results within 4 weeks
Watch out for
  • Premium pricing
  • Two-step routine takes longer

Why we love it
  • SPF30 daily UVA+UVB protection
  • Q10 antioxidant support
  • Pleasant non-greasy texture
  • Affordable, widely stocked

NIVEA Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Power SPF15 Firming Day Cream
NIVEA

Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Power SPF15 Firming Day Cream

8.5
/ 10
Very Good

Same NIVEA Q10 cream chassis with SPF15 instead of SPF30. SPF30 is preferable for UK summer use; SPF15 is fine for winter days indoors. Choose between #3 and #4 by season — many people own both.

Why we love it
  • SPF15 + Q10 antioxidant
  • Sub-£10 budget price
  • Same NIVEA formulation as #3
  • Lighter feel than SPF30 version
Watch out for
  • SPF15 insufficient for UK summer sun
  • Same fragrance as SPF30 version
  • Less protection on bright days

medicube Triple Collagen Cream (Hyaluronic Acid)
medicube

Triple Collagen Cream (Hyaluronic Acid)

8.4
/ 10
Good

medicube is a Korean clinical skincare brand — K-beauty's strength is interesting formulations and pleasant textures. Triple Collagen cream contains hydrolysed collagen, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. The collagen evidence is mixed; the hyaluronic and niacinamide are evidence-based.

Why we love it
  • K-beauty texture craft
  • Niacinamide (evidence-based ingredient)
  • Hyaluronic acid hydration
  • Suitable for layering routines
Watch out for
  • Premium price tier
  • Topical collagen evidence is weak
  • K-beauty fragrance may not suit Western preferences

How to choose

Active ingredients, SPF and matching to your skin type

Three principles cut through skincare marketing. The most important ones are the simplest.

1.
SPF is the only proven anti-ageing intervention

UV damage causes around 80% of visible skin ageing — wrinkles, pigmentation, loss of elasticity. A daily SPF30+ moisturiser (with UVA coverage, marked by the UVA-in-circle symbol on UK packaging) does more than any anti-ageing serum at any price. Look for 'broad spectrum' or PA++++ ratings. If your day cream doesn't include SPF, you need to apply SPF separately every morning.

2.
Match active ingredient to your skin goal

Dryness: hyaluronic acid (humectant — pulls water into skin), glycerin, ceramides. Wrinkles: retinol/retinoid (the only ingredient with strong wrinkle-reduction evidence), niacinamide. Dullness/pigmentation: vitamin C (in stable L-ascorbic acid form), niacinamide, alpha hydroxy acids. Sensitivity: avoid fragrance, alcohol, essential oils; look for ceramides and centella asiatica. Don't stack multiple actives without research — over-using actives is the most common cause of skincare-induced irritation.

3.
Patch test new products

Apply a small amount inside your wrist or behind the ear for 24-48 hours before using on your face. New ingredients can trigger redness or breakouts even in people with apparently 'normal' skin. Retinoids and acids (AHA/BHA) almost always cause initial dryness or peeling — this is normal and usually settles in 2-4 weeks, but the initial 'purge' isn't pleasant.

If you only buy one product, make it a daily SPF30+ broad-spectrum moisturiser. Add a retinol product 2-3 evenings a week if you're concerned about wrinkles. Everything else is optional refinement.

Olay Total Effects 7-In-1 Anti-Ageing Moisturiser SPF15
Olay

Total Effects 7-In-1 Anti-Ageing Moisturiser SPF15

7.9
/ 10
Good

Olay's long-running 7-in-1 cream with SPF15. The '7 effects' branding bundles hydration, anti-ageing, firming and brightening claims — the science behind each is variable but the underlying formulation is competent. SPF15 plus niacinamide is the most evidence-based pairing here.

Why we love it
  • Niacinamide-based active (evidence-based)
  • SPF15 daily protection
  • Iconic UK pharmacy brand
  • Affordable, widely stocked
Watch out for
  • SPF15 not high enough for summer
  • 7-in-1 branding is marketing
  • Some find scent strong

medicube Collagen Jelly Cream (Niacinamide + Freeze-Dried Collagen)
medicube

Collagen Jelly Cream (Niacinamide + Freeze-Dried Collagen)

7.6
/ 10
Good

medicube's lighter 'jelly' texture variant of the Triple Collagen cream — same actives in a more hydrating, less occlusive base. Better for combination/oily skin types that find heavier creams clog pores.

Why we love it
  • Lightweight jelly texture
  • Niacinamide (evidence-based)
  • Better for oily/combo skin
  • Pleasant K-beauty formulation
Watch out for
  • Premium price
  • Less occlusion = less effective on very dry skin
  • Fragrance moderate

L'Oréal Paris Laser Renew Triple Action Anti-Ageing Cream
L'Oréal

Paris Laser Renew Triple Action Anti-Ageing Cream

7.3
/ 10
Fair

L'Oréal's Laser Renew range positions itself as an in-clinic-laser alternative — overpromise on branding, but the formulation includes pro-retinol and hyaluronic acid, both evidence-based actives. Use evenings only (retinoids increase sun sensitivity).

Why we love it
  • Contains pro-retinol (retinoid family)
  • Hyaluronic acid hydration
  • Evening anti-ageing target
  • L'Oréal batch consistency
Watch out for
  • 'Laser-equivalent' branding is hyperbole
  • Retinoid can irritate sensitive skin
  • Increased sun sensitivity = need stricter SPF

ROSVANEE Retinol Moisturiser (Dermatologist-Tested)
ROSVANEE

Retinol Moisturiser (Dermatologist-Tested)

7
/ 10
Fair

ROSVANEE is a budget retinol-focused brand on Amazon UK. Retinol is the gold-standard wrinkle-reduction active; ROSVANEE's formulation is mid-strength — gentler than prescription tretinoin but stronger than 'pro-retinol' fakes. 'Dermatologist tested' is marketing, not certification.

Why we love it
  • Retinol — proven wrinkle-reduction active
  • Budget pricing for retinol category
  • Sub-£20 retinol entry
  • Decent fragrance level
Watch out for
  • Dermatologist 'tested' isn't 'certified'
  • Retinol causes initial irritation/peel

L'Oréal Paris Wrinkle Expert 65+ Anti-Wrinkle Day Cream
L'Oréal

Paris Wrinkle Expert 65+ Anti-Wrinkle Day Cream

6.7
/ 10
Fair

L'Oréal's 65+ targeted day cream. Mature-skin specific formulations focus on heavier moisture and gentle actives rather than aggressive retinoids. Calcium is the marketing-flagged active; the evidence is supportive rather than transformative.

Why we love it
  • Targeted at mature skin needs
  • Heavier moisturisation
  • Sub-£10 affordable for mature range
  • L'Oréal brand consistency
Watch out for
  • Marketing focus on age group is more brand than science
  • No SPF
  • Heavier feel may not suit warm climates

The verdict

L'Oréal Revitalift wins on hyaluronic delivery; NIVEA Q10 SPF30 is the best daily SPF integration.

The L'Oréal Revitalift Filler takes the top spot because it does the basic job competently — hyaluronic acid in a stable cream base, sold at high enough volume on Amazon UK that batch consistency is reliable. It's not a clinical-strength formula, but for the price it delivers what the marketing claims.

The smarter daily-use buy is the NIVEA Q10 Anti-Wrinkle SPF30. SPF protection is the single most important anti-ageing intervention, and a moisturiser that builds SPF30 into the daily routine eliminates the 'I forgot to apply sunscreen' problem most adults have. The Q10 active is supportive (decent antioxidant evidence) rather than transformative, but the SPF coverage matters.

Below the mainstream tier, the picture splits. K-beauty brands like medicube offer interesting collagen/peptide formulations at premium prices — the science is less established but the formulations are pleasant to use. Retinol-tier picks (ROSVANEE, L'Oréal Laser Renew) need careful integration into routines and aren't beginner-friendly. Mature-skin specific creams (L'Oréal 65+) target genuine concerns but the active ingredients are similar to the standard L'Oréal range.

Frequently asked

Common questions

What's the single most important anti-ageing product?
Daily broad-spectrum SPF30+. UV damage causes around 80% of visible skin ageing — wrinkles, pigmentation, loss of elasticity. A moisturiser with SPF (like the NIVEA Q10 SPF30 in this list) covers two needs in one step and does more than any anti-ageing serum at any price.
Does retinol really work?
Yes — it's the most evidence-backed wrinkle-reduction active in cosmetic skincare. Expect 8-12 weeks of consistent use to see visible results. Start with low-strength retinol (0.1-0.3%) twice a week and build up; sudden high-strength use causes redness and peeling. Prescription tretinoin (a stronger retinoid) is more effective again — ask a GP if interested.
How long should one tub last?
A 50 ml tub used twice daily lasts roughly 8-12 weeks. If yours lasts longer, you're under-applying; if shorter, you're using more than needed (a pea-sized amount is enough). Replace 12 months after opening even if some product remains — preservatives degrade and bacteria growth becomes a concern.
Do I need separate day and night creams?
Not necessarily. Day creams should include SPF; night creams often include retinoids or stronger actives that increase sun sensitivity. If your day cream has SPF, you can use any non-SPF moisturiser at night — including a heavier one if your skin feels drier overnight.
Are expensive creams worth it?
Mostly no — the price reflects packaging, marketing and brand prestige more than ingredient cost. The active ingredients (retinol, niacinamide, hyaluronic, vitamin C) are similarly effective at £15 as at £150. The exception is properly stable vitamin C (which is genuinely hard to formulate) and prescription retinoids. For 95% of skincare needs, mid-market brands match high-end results.
