Best LED Bulbs of 2026

Last reviewed 19 May 2026 by Best Products UK Editorial Team

LED bulb buying is mostly about three numbers nobody reads on the box: colour temperature (warm vs cool white), lumens (actual brightness — not wattage), and CRI (colour rendering accuracy). Pick wrong and the room feels clinical, the bulbs look dim despite the wattage label, or your skin tone looks off in the bathroom mirror. This ranking sorts by fitting type, then by colour temperature and CRI.

How we tested

Best Products UK is a review aggregator, not a test lab. For this guide we read Amazon UK customer reviews focused on real brightness vs claimed lumens, colour-rendering on skin tones, dimmer compatibility and lifespan over 12+ months; cross-referenced against Which?, Wirecutter and Energy Saving Trust testing; and weighted long-term ownership signals (early failures, colour shift over time, buzz when dimmed) more heavily than first-month impressions. Smart bulbs are evaluated on bridge requirements and ecosystem lock-in alongside basic light quality.

How to choose

Colour temperature, lumens and CRI

Three boring numbers cover almost every LED-bulb buying mistake.

1.
Colour temperature: warm white vs cool white

Measured in Kelvin (K). 2700 K (warm white): incandescent-bulb feel, cozy, ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms. 3000-3500 K (warm-neutral): kitchens with warm decor, hallways. 4000 K (neutral white): office, study, garage. 5000-6500 K (cool/daylight): bathrooms, kitchens with cool decor, task lighting, home offices. Don't mix temperatures in the same room — the mismatch is visually jarring.

2.
Lumens are brightness, not watts

Old habit: '60 W bulb'. New reality: '60 W equivalent' actually consumes 8-10 W of electricity but produces 806 lumens of light. The lumens number is what matters. Rough conversions: 40 W = 470 lm, 60 W = 806 lm, 75 W = 1100 lm, 100 W = 1521 lm. Most rooms need 1500-3000 lumens total (across all bulbs). Counting lumens is more useful than counting bulbs.

3.
CRI: how natural colours look

CRI (Colour Rendering Index) measures how accurately a bulb shows colours. 100 = sunlight. 80+ = acceptable. 90+ = good. Cheap LEDs often score 70-80 — colours look muted, skin tones look pale or yellow. For bathrooms (makeup mirror), kitchens (food prep) and any room where colour matters, look for CRI 90+. For utility spaces (hallway, garage), CRI 80 is fine. Most listings don't publish CRI; reading customer reviews for 'colour looks off' or 'bathroom skin tone' is the workaround.

For living rooms and bedrooms: 2700 K warm white, around 806 lumens per bulb (60 W equivalent). For kitchens and bathrooms: 4000-5000 K, 1100+ lumens per bulb. Always replace bulbs in pairs/sets to avoid colour mismatch within a fitting.

The verdict

Lepro warm white bayonet wins on price/quality; Energizer 100 W equivalent is the bright pick.

The Lepro bayonet bulb takes the top spot because it nails the boring fundamentals — 2700 K warm white (the colour every UK living room should use), 60 W incandescent equivalent (806 lumens), high CRI, 4.6-star reviews after years on Amazon UK. At under £4 per bulb in multi-packs it's the easiest universal recommendation for living rooms, bedrooms and hallways.

The Energizer 100 W equivalent (1521 lumens, 6500 K daylight white) is the right pick for kitchens, bathrooms and home offices where you need genuinely bright, cool-toned light. Cool-white bulbs in living rooms feel like a hospital; warm-white bulbs in kitchens hide stains and food colours. Match the bulb to the room's job.

Below the everyday bulb tier, the picture splits into specialist fittings (GU10 spotlights, G9 capsules) and smart bulbs (Tapo, generic RGBW). Tapo's bulbs work without a hub (Wi-Fi direct) — convenient for one-off smart bulbs; Philips Hue (not in this list) needs a separate hub but offers tighter integration. For UK households starting smart lighting, Tapo is the cheapest entry.

Frequently asked

Common questions

What colour temperature should I use in which room?
Living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms: 2700 K warm white (cozy, incandescent feel). Hallways, utility: 3000-3500 K warm-neutral. Kitchens, bathrooms, home offices: 4000-5000 K (bright, task-friendly). Don't mix temperatures within one room — it looks visually broken.
How many lumens do I need?
Living rooms: 1500-3000 lumens total (across all bulbs and lamps). Kitchens: 3000-4000. Bathrooms: 1500-2500. Hallways/utility: 600-1000. Multiply by your room size if larger than average. The number that matters is total lumens in the room, not lumens per bulb.
Are smart bulbs worth it?
For specific use cases yes — turning lights on remotely, scheduling, controlling by voice, full RGB for moods. For 'just on/off' lighting, a regular bulb costs 10-20% as much and lasts the same. Most UK households are best served by smart bulbs in 2-4 strategic spots (lounge lamp, hallway light) and regular LEDs elsewhere.
Do LED bulbs work with old dimmers?
Sometimes. Old TRIAC dimmers (designed for incandescent) often flicker LEDs or fail to dim low. Look for 'dimmable' marked on the bulb listing and consider replacing the dimmer with a 'leading-edge LED' compatible version (£15-£25). Smart bulbs (Tapo, Hue) bypass the dimmer entirely — they dim via app/voice instead, with a normal switch-on/off.
How long do LED bulbs really last?
Quoted lifespans are 15,000-25,000 hours (15-25 years at 3 hours/day). Real-world: 5-10 years is typical because power-supply (driver) failures are the common death rather than the LED itself. Premium-brand bulbs (Philips, Osram) tend to outlast generic bulbs by 30-50%. Buy multi-packs once and store spares — branded LED prices have stabilised over the past 3-4 years.
