Best Yoga Mats of 2026

Last reviewed 19 May 2026 by Best Products UK Editorial Team

A yoga mat looks like a piece of foam, but the polymer chemistry decides whether your hands stay put in downward dog, whether your knees ache in low crescent, and whether the mat curls at the corners after three weeks. PVC, TPE and natural rubber each handle grip and longevity differently. This ranking sorts the genuinely usable mats from the rebadged gym foam.

How we tested

Best Products UK is a review aggregator, not a test lab. For this guide we read Amazon UK customer reviews focused on grip when sweating, durability over 6–12 months, and odour outgassing; cross-referenced against Yoga Journal, Wirecutter and Yogamatters product testing; and weighted long-term ownership signals (peeling, edge curl, smell persistence) more heavily than first-impression bounce. Eco-claims are checked against actual material composition where disclosed.

9.4
/ 10
Excellent

Amazon's own-brand mat is the easiest universal recommendation. 6 mm TPE, includes a carry strap, decent grip and durability for the £20 price point. Amazon's return policy means if you don't like the feel after a few sessions, sending it back is friction-free.

  • Carry strap included
  • Amazon refund policy applies

OZE

Sports Extra-Thick Non-Slip Yoga Mat

8.1
/ 10
Good

OZE Sports' extra-thick NBR foam mat — 10 mm of cushioning that makes it more of an exercise mat than a yoga mat strictly speaking. Excellent for home gym workouts where joint protection matters more than balance stability.

Why we love it
  • Extra-thick 10 mm cushion
  • Great for floor exercises / kneeling work
  • Strong 4.6-star UK review pattern
  • Affordable
Watch out for
  • Too thick for balance-heavy yoga

How to choose

Material, thickness and what your practice actually needs

Yoga-mat marketing is mostly colour swatches. Three real-world considerations cover the buying decision.

1.
PVC, TPE or natural rubber

PVC is the cheapest, most durable, and stickiest when dry — but it's a non-recyclable plastic and can smell for the first few weeks. TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is more eco-friendly (recyclable), has better grip when wet, but is softer and shows wear earlier. Natural rubber gives the best grip overall but contains latex (allergy risk) and is the heaviest. For most home practices TPE is the right default.

2.
Thickness: 4 mm vs 6 mm vs 8 mm+

4 mm is the standard for studio yoga and gives the best balance/stability for standing postures. 6 mm (the most common UK retail thickness) adds joint padding for knees and hips, important for older practitioners and Pilates use. 8 mm+ is more of an exercise mat than a yoga mat — too thick for stability in poses like Tree or Warrior 3. If in doubt, 6 mm is the safe middle ground.

3.
Grip when sweating matters most

Cold-room yoga (Hatha, Yin) doesn't sweat-test a mat. Hot yoga, Vinyasa or summer practice can turn a £20 PVC mat into a slip-and-slide. Look for textured surfaces (the Yogii's diamond pattern; Liforme's polyurethane top) or natural rubber — these maintain grip when wet. If you sweat heavily, also keep a small yoga towel handy regardless of the mat.

For occasional home practice, a £15–£25 TPE mat is the right buy. For three-times-a-week or more, spending £30–£50 on a better TPE or rubber mat gets you a tool that lasts 3+ years.

The verdict

Amazon Basics' TPE mat wins on value; Yogii's 6 mm mat is the premium pick.

The Amazon Basics 1/4-inch TPE mat takes the top spot because at its price (under £20) nothing in this category comes close on grip-vs-durability. TPE is more eco-friendly than PVC, the 6 mm thickness is the right compromise between joint padding and stability, and Amazon's returns policy makes the buying decision low-risk.

If you practice four or more times a week, the Yogii 6 mm TPE mat is worth the upgrade — better surface texture for sweat grip, laser-cut alignment lines that genuinely help in hot yoga, and a denser foam that doesn't flatten after six months. Both Core Balance picks sit in the same tier for cooler-room practice.

Below the £15 line, mats are roughly interchangeable — the OZE and KAYMAN picks share the same overseas TPE foam factory output as a dozen other Amazon brands. Buy on colour and review count, not brand name. Cork-topped and natural-rubber mats (not in this list) sit in the £40+ tier and are worth considering if latex allergies aren't a concern.

Frequently asked

Common questions

What's the difference between PVC and TPE yoga mats?
PVC is cheaper, more durable, stickier when dry, but harder to recycle. TPE is slightly more expensive, more eco-friendly (recyclable), maintains grip when wet, but compresses earlier. For most home practice, TPE's wet-grip and eco profile makes it the better default; for studio professionals who want maximum durability, PVC still has fans.
How thick should my yoga mat be?
4 mm for studio/serious practice (best balance); 6 mm for home practice and Pilates (most common UK retail); 8–10 mm for HIIT/exercise/joint protection. Going thicker isn't always better — over 8 mm hurts balance stability in standing poses.
Why does my new yoga mat smell?
TPE and PVC both off-gas mildly when new. Unroll the mat in a well-ventilated room for 24–48 hours before first use; the smell typically dissipates within a week. Persistent odour after two weeks is a quality issue — return for refund.
How do I clean a yoga mat?
Wipe down after each sweaty session with a damp microfibre cloth and a 50/50 white-vinegar/water mix. Deep-clean monthly by hanging the mat over a shower rail and rinsing with warm soapy water. Avoid putting mats in the washing machine — the agitator damages most foam.
How long does a yoga mat last?
Casual home use: 3–5 years. Daily practice: 1–2 years. Signs you need to replace: visible compression where you stand, peeling/flaking surface, or the mat slips on the floor (the rubber backing has degraded). Budget mats compress fastest; premium TPE or rubber lasts longest.
